NZ Day 12. Wellington Mt Victoria and the Te Papa museum.

First stop, top of Mt Victoria. An easy drive-to up a winding road with panoramic views over the city and airport and the Cook Strait. Then halfway down the mountain to sleuth for some LOTR sites! This was were Frodo and his friends were chased by the Black Riders and hit under the bank while the Nazgul horseman was on the road above.
Then to the museum, but, first things first…Starbucks. I know it’s sacrilege, but you can have too much flat-white! The museum is modern and airy on 3 levels, 2, 3, 4. 2 supposedly is NZ before people, then 3 is the Maori and 4 is the impact of Europeans. Although well done, Randi and I both thought the whole thing could have done with a focus workshop to try and understand what they were trying to say with the exhibits. The narrative for the first 2 floors was a bit disjointed, maybe trying to cover too much? I’m not sure. We had an enjoyable time there. The 5th floor is the National art collection which to me, was very disappointing. I didn’t see a single work that really insisted on my attention or made me think about things differently. Still, I suppose its a work in progress.
By the time we left it was pouring with rain so we headed back to the campsite in Lower Hutt to be ready for an early start for the ferry in the morning.
