Next morning, off on the road, targeting the Pancake Rocks at Punakaike. Stopped at Lyell for lunch. Lyell was a gold rush town but there’s nothing left now except some grave sites. It was in a steady decline after 1906 when the mine closed and a series of fires and an earthquake helped the process. Final end came in 1963 when fire destroyed the post office and hotel.
